For swing gate openers, we generally do not recommend using support wheels on the gate. A support wheel can add extra friction and resistance, especially on uneven, soft, sloped or rough ground. This additional drag can put extra load on the swing gate opener arms and may reduce performance.

If a swing gate has a wheel fitted, the gate should be checked and adjusted before fitting a swing arm gate opener. In many cases, the support wheel should be removed and the gate, hinges, posts and alignment should be improved so the gate can swing freely without relying on the wheel.

The gate construction also matters. Wooden gates can become heavier when wet, so they may place more load on the opener in winter or after rain than they do when dry. Solid gates or gates with a large surface area can also act like a sail in windy conditions, putting extra force on the opener arms.
